Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan officially unveiled the completed solar power car park at the Northam Boulevard today.
Nine hundred solar panels have been installed on the bitumen carpark, which is a first for the state.
When Ms McTiernan arrived, she went for a walk through the boulevard with Perdaman Group chairman Vikas Rambal.
She stopped for a chat with Andrew Quinn at Quin’s Butchers and asked him what Northam needs to be relevant for the future.
They both agreed Northam has great potential being in such close proximity to Perth.
Mr Quin raised the issue that a lot of people commute from Perth to work in Northam.
Ms McTiernan said there need to be some new industries here to create jobs for local people.
During her speech, she said solar power was the way of the future.
“We think renewable energy should be opened up in the regions,” she said. “It is good for the economy and for the zeitgeist of the town.”
